Your obligations as an employer under the Omani Labour Law

11 June 2026

What the rules say about wages, rest, accommodation and passports — in plain language.

These are not office recommendations but legal obligations. Breaching them exposes you to liability and voids the guarantee.

Wages

Paid on time and in the amount stated in the contract, preferably by bank transfer so you have proof. Deductions from salary are permitted only in the cases the rules specify.

Rest

A weekly rest day, reasonable working hours, and uninterrupted sleep. Fixing the rest day in writing from the start saves a recurring argument.

Accommodation and food

An employer obligation: a suitable sleeping place, separate where possible, and sufficient food. It is not a negotiable clause.

Passport

It belongs to the worker and may not be withheld. This is one of the points employers most often get wrong in good faith.

Working for others

The worker may not be assigned to work in another household, even a relative's, nor "lent out" for a period. The violation here is clear and the liability sits with the sponsor.

When there is a disagreement

Contact the office before it escalates. Early mediation resolves most cases, and the formal route is available if it does not.
