The first week with a new domestic worker: what makes the difference

22 July 2026

Most of the problems that reach us in the first month come from instructions never given, not from the wrong worker.

The worker has arrived, the household is enthusiastic, and the expectations in your head are perfectly clear — but they are in your head alone. That is the most overlooked point.

Write the routine down, don't explain it verbally

One page: meal times, children's bedtime, what is washed by hand, which room is off limits. Spoken instructions on day one get lost between imperfect language and travel exhaustion.

Keep the first day for getting acquainted

A long flight, a new country, an unfamiliar house. Start the actual work on day two; you will gain a week of productivity for one day of rest.

Agree the weekly rest day at the start

Do not defer it to "let's see how things go". The weekly rest day is a right under the Labour Law, and fixing which day it falls on from the outset prevents a recurring argument.

Hand her her passport

Holding a worker's passport is not lawful. If the worry is losing it, agree on a place she knows and can reach whenever she wants.

Contact us early

If something feels off, call in the first week, not the third month. A small problem is solved by a phone call; an accumulated one needs a replacement.
